Piber Digital

Digitization of the intangible and tangible cultural heritage around the breeding of the Lipizzaners

The Spanish Riding School, together with the internationally renowned Ludwig Boltzmann Institute for Archaeological Prospection and Virtual Archaeology (https://archpro.lbg.ac.at), led by Wolfgang Neubauer, has launched an ambitious research project to digitize the cultural heritage surrounding the breeding of the Lipizzaners at the Federal Stud Piber in winter 2020. With the help of state-of-the-art technology, the LBI ArchPro researchers are linking the intangible cultural heritage of mankind with the material heritage at Piber, which has been preserved in its most original form to this day: using high-resolution laser scans, photographs and films from the air as well as on the ground, Piber is being transformed into virtual space. For this purpose, state-of-the-art high-precision laser scanners manufactured in Horn, Lower Austria, by RIEGL Laser Measurement Systems GmbH, as well as the high-tech drone RiCOPTER, also developed by RIEGL, are used. Significant objects from past centuries, from Piber Castle to the historic indoor riding arena to the loose stables for the mares and their foals, are brought closer to the visitors in a digital way. With modern digital methods and techniques, access to this extraordinary cultural heritage is preserved and secured for future generations.

In the museum of the Lipizzaner stud farm Piber, the exhibition was redesigned in cooperation with the LBI ArchPro. Multimedia stations on the intangible UNESCO cultural heritage of Lipizzaner breeding as well as 3D models of the landscape and historical buildings, which have been extensively digitized by the Institute, tell the long story of the Lipizzaner horses, the stud in Piber and the Court Riding School in Vienna. This research initiative of the Spanish Riding School gives new impulses to the Lipizzaner Stud Piber, but also to the entire region. The digitization and communication of the cultural heritage of Lipizzaner breeding and the promotion of science and research also serve cultural tourism and strengthen the region in its economic development.
