Carnuntum 2011

The discovery of the gladiator school in Carnuntum

In 2011 the international interdisciplinary research team of the Ludwig Boltzmann Institute for Archaeological Prospection and Virtual Archaeology, led by Wolfgang Neubauer, announced the unique discovery of a school of gladiators at the Roman town of Carnuntum using latest non-invasive geophysical prospection methods.

The sensational discovery was presented together with the then governor of the County of Lower Austria, Erwin Pröll, and paved the way for the large-scale archaeological prospection project focussing on the complete scan of the ancient town of Carnuntum with high-resolution magnetometers and ground-penetrating radar systems (“ArchPro Carnuntum”).

The discovery and the subsequent scientific publication (Neubauer W. et al 2014. The discovery of the school of gladiators at Carnuntum, Austria. In: Antiquity (88), 173-190.) generated international attention in the scientific community and the media e.g. The New York Times.
